UNICEF is the world’s most powerful force for children. Across 190 countries and territories, and in the world’s toughest places, we provide and advocate for education, health and nutrition services. Protect children from violence and abuse. Bring clean water and sanitation to those in need. Keep them safe from climate change and disease. Serve as the world’s largest provider of vaccines. The Opportunity

UNICEF Canada is looking for a Senior Copywriter who combines exceptional writing ability with strong conceptual thinking and a strategic understanding of brand and business objectives. As a member of The Playground creative team, you'll work closely with the Creative Director, Art Director, and cross-functional partners to develop compelling ideas and high-quality copy across integrated campaigns, digital commerce, CRM, social, and donor experiences. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable developing big campaign ideas and crafting precise, conversion-focused messaging. You're a confident presenter, a collaborative creative partner, and someone who can elevate the quality of work through thoughtful direction and mentorship. With a heart for storytelling and a sharp editorial eye, you craft compelling content that reflects the dignity of the communities we serve and the integrity of our brand. You'll play an important role in shaping creative solutions, maintaining brand consistency, and helping the team deliver work that is both creatively impactful and drives donations. Experience working in marketing agency-style environments with premium global brands and complex digital marketing ecosystems is strongly preferred.

Key Accountabilities

Brand Storytelling & Creative Content (80%)

  • Lead copy development across integrated marketing campaigns, digital and social platforms, e-commerce, CRM, and branded content.
  • Partner closely with the Creative Director and Art Director to develop original creative concepts, campaign platforms, brand narratives, and compelling messaging.
  • Translate business objectives, consumer insights, and strategic briefs into creative ideas that build brand relevance, engagement, and measurable results.
  • Develop high-impact headlines, scripts, campaign messaging, product storytelling, and conversion-focused content across a variety of formats and channels.
  • Establish and maintain a consistent, premium brand voice while ensuring messaging is tailored appropriately for specific platforms, audiences, and donor journeys.
  • Review, edit, and approve copy from a creative quality perspective, ensuring accuracy, consistency, clarity, and alignment with brand standards before final stakeholder approvals.
  • Confidently present creative concepts, articulate the strategic rationale behind ideas, and lead copy-related discussions with internal stakeholders and clients.
  • Work collaboratively with teams to refine creative solutions, address feedback, and navigate complex project requirements.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve campaign messaging, content effectiveness, creative workflows, and copy standardization.
  • Balance creative ambition with practical execution, managing multiple projects while maintaining high standards under tight deadlines.
  • Championing innovative creative approaches, emerging technologies, and AI-enabled workflows that enhance creative development, efficiency, and quality.

Collaboration & Project Management (20%)

  • Deliver high-quality written content that meets project requirements, timelines, and strategic objectives—while effectively managing multiple assignments in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment working in a project management tool such as Asana.
  • Be able to maintain content archives, ensuring teams have access to the most current materials.
  • As part of the Brand Marketing team, actively participate in post-mortems with curiosity and a growth mindset—leveraging data insights to refine messaging, optimize performance, and deepen audience engagement.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement by actively participating in training sessions, workshops, and industry conferences. Stay informed about emerging tools, technologies, and best practices to support the creative team’s ability to deliver high-impact, innovative work.
  • Bring a collaborative, roll-up-your-sleeves attitude—willing to pitch in during peak periods to support the creative team with tasks beyond writing, such as attending shoots, assisting with small design requests, or contributing to production-related activities as needed.

Qualifications

  • A strong writer with a diploma or degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Marketing, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of professional copywriting experience, preferably within a creative agency, with demonstrated experience developing integrated campaigns and digital content.
  • An exceptional portfolio showcasing strong conceptual thinking, integrated campaign ideas, brand storytelling, and performance-driven copywriting. Portfolio link required when applying.
  • Proven ability to develop compelling creative concepts and carry them through multiple channels and executions.
  • Advanced understanding of brand strategy, consumer behaviour, digital marketing, and the role of copy in driving awareness, engagement, and conversion.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to move seamlessly between high-level creative concepts and detailed technical or promotional copy.
  • Knowledgeable in SEO/SEM best practices and how to use data to inform content strategy.
  • Experience working with premium global brands and maintaining consistent brand voice across complex, multi-channel campaigns.
  • Experience with digital commerce, e-commerce platforms, CRM, social media, and product marketing is a bonus.
  • Confident presentation and communication skills, including experience presenting concepts and recommendations to senior stakeholders or clients.
  • Excellent attention to detail, particularly when working with technical product information, promotional claims, legal requirements, and brand guidelines.
  • Strong organizational skills, sound creative judgment, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume agency environment.
  • Familiar with Canadian Press Style and bilingual in English and French (an asset).
