About Daedal Systems
Daedal Systems is a plasma diagnostic company for the fusion energy industry. Today, every fusion company needs the same R&D plasma diagnostics, but each company builds them in-house, despite them not being core IP. Daedal Systems is building a platform for industrialized plasma diagnostics, which will enable us to deploy suites of plasma diagnostics on fusion devices across the industry. Ultimately, we will provide the operating infrastructure for every fusion power plant.
We are seeking talented individuals spanning plasma diagnosticians, engineers and operators to join us in this mission to accelerate fusion energy with industrialized plasma diagnostics. We are building the measurement infrastructure layer upon which fusion will be realized.
The Role
Daedal Systems is looking for an Experimental Plasma Physicist to join our lab team. Working alongside our senior physicists, you will help design and build the measurement and diagnostic devices at the heart of our industrialized plasma diagnostic platform.
This is a hands-on, full-time role based in person in our Toronto lab. You will build lab set-ups, run experiments, record results with care, and source the components our diagnostics depend on. You will also travel occasionally to install and service our products at customer sites.
Responsibilities
- Work with senior physicists to design and build plasma measurement and diagnostic devices
- Build, align and maintain laboratory set-ups for diagnostic development and testing
- Plan and run experiments, and record procedures, data and results diligently
- Analyze experimental data and help translate findings into design improvements
- Identify vendors and source components that meet the required technical specifications
- Lead lab management: design the lab's organizational system for equipment, components, cabling and power supplies, set good working practices for an orderly and safe lab, and ensure the whole team adheres to them
- Travel occasionally to install, commission and service Daedal diagnostics at customer sites
Education
- PhD in plasma physics, or a closely related field preferred (no prior industry experience required); BSc and MSc applicants with relevant hands-on experience are also welcome to apply
Essential Requirements
- Hands-on experimental experience building and operating laboratory set-ups, ideally involving plasmas
- Experience designing, running and documenting experiments, with rigorous record-keeping
- Experience with spectroscopy, preferably in plasma diagnostics
- Ability to read technical specifications and source suitable components from vendors
- Collaborative working style and the ability to work closely with senior physicists
- Able to work full time, in person, in our Toronto lab.
- Comfortable with occasional travel to install and service systems at customer sites
Desirable
- Experience on fusion devices or other plasma experiments
- Experience with high-power laser optics, such as beam alignment and handling, and laser safety, as well as practical skills with vacuum systems, RF electronics and data acquisition
- Experience with data analysis in Python, MATLAB or similar
- Prior experience in a startup or early-stage technical business
What You Can Expect
You will join as one of Daedal's early technical hires and work directly with our senior physicists in the lab. You will gain hands-on experience across the full life of a diagnostic, from bench-top prototype to a system installed on a customer's fusion device.
As the team grows, you will take on increasing ownership of experiments and diagnostic subsystems, and help shape the measurement infrastructure that will be applied across the fusion industry.
What We Offer
- Annual salary range: 80k–120k CAD, depending on education and experience
- Compensation range shown is indicative; final salary and total compensation will be tailored to the candidate's experience and fit.
- Significant equity ownership in an early-stage startup
- Immigration support
- Hands-on work on key diagnostics alongside experienced plasma physicists
- Health benefits
Daedal Systems is committed to an accessible and inclusive recruitment process. Accommodation is available upon request for applicants with disabilities throughout the recruitment, assessment and selection process. Please let us know if you require accommodation, and we will work with you to meet your needs.
