About the Role

Atkinson Construction is expanding its Grande Prairie team and is looking for a skilled, experienced Foreman Carpenter ready to lead crews on meaningful commercial projects across Alberta. This is a development path position — for the right candidate, the Foreman Carpenter role is a direct stepping stone toward a Site Superintendent position as we continue to grow.

You'll work alongside your crew while providing direction, mentoring, and leadership — keeping projects moving safely, efficiently, and to a high standard of quality. If you're a carpenter who's ready to step into a leadership role with a company that genuinely values your growth, this is the opportunity.

What We Offer

  • Competitive rate of pay ($37–$45/hr)
  • Comprehensive benefits through Open Circle
  • Bonus pay opportunities
  • Career development path toward Site Superintendent
  • Employee-owned company — your success is shared
  • Stable, full-time employment on diverse commercial projects across Western Canada
  • A team culture built on mentorship, safety, and doing the work right

Your Responsibilities

  • Lead daily crew activities and keep projects moving toward deadlines, performance targets, and quality goals
  • Work hands-on alongside carpenters and labourers while providing direction, task assignments, and mentorship
  • Oversee and review work completed by ACL staff and subcontractors; report concerns to the Site Superintendent
  • Act as secondary site contact when the Superintendent is unavailable or offsite
  • Enforce ACL safety standards and OHS regulations; ensure safe work practices are followed at all times
  • Assist with daily safety reports, toolbox talks, hazard assessments, and site records
  • Conduct orientations for new ACL staff and subcontractors as per ACL's Safety Program
  • Monitor equipment for safety and maintenance concerns; stop unsafe use immediately
  • Train and mentor crew members in carpentry skills and safe work practices
  • Identify deficiencies and lead corrective work; ensure daily goals align with the overall project schedule
  • Assist in tracking crew hours and coordinating material needs with the Superintendent

Skills & Experience Required

  • Journeyman Carpenter Certificate (or equivalent experience in a lead/supervisory carpentry role)
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints; familiarity with Alberta Building Code requirements
  • Experience with wood framing, interior and exterior finishing, concrete formwork, rebar, thermal and moisture systems, and related scopes
  • Demonstrated leadership ability — you can direct a crew, mentor others, and hold the line on quality and safety
  • Strong communication skills with supervisors, trades, and site staff
  • Valid driver's license (driver's abstract may be required)
  • Familiarity with temporary site setup, site security, and equipment operation

Project Types

You'll be working on commercial and multi-family projects across the Grande Prairie region — including projects like recreation centres, municipal facilities, mixed-use developments, and more. At ACL, no two projects are the same, and that's what makes the work interesting.
