Job Description

Manager, Learning & Development

Role Purpose:

The Manager, Learning & Development serves as a trusted partner and advisor to Takeda Canada’s commercial teams and the broader organization. The role is responsible for initiating, developing, deploying, and tracking innovative learning and development programs aligned with the organization’s strategies and goals, with a particular focus on building the capabilities of our sales and marketing teams. As part of Commercial & Marketing Operations (C&MO), the role works closely with the International Marketing & Commercial Excellence (MCE) Commercial Capabilities team, bringing global academies, frameworks, and best practices to life in a way that is relevant for Canada, and developing local solutions where they add the most value.

The role contributes to building a workplace focused on innovation, future readiness, and best-in-class customer experiences, while striving for and fostering a culture of continuous growth and learning.

The role brings together three core areas:

  • Sales and marketing capability: helping Key Account Managers (KAMs), sales managers, and marketing teams strengthen the selling, coaching, and customer-engagement skills they need to succeed, using engaging, innovative, and digitally enabled learning approaches.
  • Omnichannel engagement and future readiness: building omnichannel customer engagement (OCE) competencies and digital dexterity so our teams feel confident and equipped to deliver a best-in-class customer experience as channels, tools, and ways of working evolve.
  • Learning partnership and impact: listening to teams and leaders to understand their needs, connecting MCE capability programs to Canadian priorities, and tracking the impact of learning so programs keep improving.

The scope of the role will continue to evolve alongside C&MO and the MCE operating model, including supporting broader Canada capability needs and other areas as needed by the business.

Reporting Line:

  • Reports to: Head of Commercial & Marketing Operations
  • Direct reports: 0 (leads through partnership, influence, and cross-functional collaboration)

Key Accountabilities:

Future-ready sales and marketing capability building

  • Partner with marketing teams, sales leadership, and KAMs to design and deliver learning that strengthens sales effectiveness, sales coaching capability, and omnichannel customer engagement.
  • Support field readiness for launches and new indications, aligning learning plans with Canada launch plans and the enterprise Launch Excellence framework.
  • Prioritize innovation in Learning & Development to increase employee engagement and skill development and to evolve how we support health care providers and patients, ensuring a best-in-class future customer experience.
  • Develop digital dexterity capabilities for the commercial team and the broader enterprise to enhance skills and efficacy in a digital-first environment.

MCE partnership & local adaptation

  • Serve as Canada’s learning partner to MCE Commercial Capabilities, adapting centrally developed academies, frameworks, and standards (e.g., Sales Academy, product launch training, selling models) so they are relevant for Canadian teams and meet Canadian compliance requirements.
  • Develop Canada-specific learning solutions where they add the most value, complementing programs available from MCE.
  • Share Canadian team insights, learnings, and best practices with MCE to inform future capability programs.

Learning needs, planning & impact

  • Listen to KAMs and commercial leadership to understand capability needs, identify the root causes behind them, and work together to identify the right solution.
  • Design and implement learning and business impact measurements; collect, analyze, and interpret data for making informed decisions and continuously improving programs.
  • Maintain a prioritized Canada learning plan aligned with the organization’s strategies and goals, launch timelines, and capacity.

Learning culture, cross-functional collaboration & compliance

  • Actively promote and create a culture of development, fostering a growth mindset and promoting continuous improvement for all Takeda employees.
  • Develop deep insights about the cross-functional links in the organization and introduce team development opportunities to promote best practice sharing and synergies that create well-orchestrated, high-performing teams.
  • Ensure learning content and programs meet Canadian regulatory and compliance standards and the Takeda code of conduct, coordinating review with Medical, Legal, and Compliance as appropriate.
  • Contribute to other evolving capability areas as needed by the business.

Key Interfaces:

  • Head of Commercial & Marketing Operations and the C&MO team, which spans Commercial Operations, Next Generation Customer Experience, Insights & Analytics, and CRM
  • Commercial teams (BU Heads, Marketers, Sales Leadership, and KAMs)
  • International MCE Commercial Capabilities (including Sales Capabilities, Marketing Capabilities, and Launch Excellence)
  • People & Culture, Medical, Regulatory, Compliance, Legal, and DD&T

Education, Certifications & Experience:

  • University degree in a health sciences, business, education, or related field of study.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry, which can include agency or vendor-side roles supporting pharma clients.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience building capability or driving commercial performance. Relevant backgrounds include Learning & Development or training (in-house or agency), pharmaceutical sales or key account management, sales leadership, or commercial excellence.
  • Proven track record of developing others and leading change, for example designing and delivering training programs, serving as a field trainer, mentor, or launch champion, or rallying teams around new ways of working.
  • Asset: certification in instructional design, adult learning, or coaching (e.g., ATD, ICF).

Competencies:

  • Learning expertise: deep knowledge of Adult Learning Principles, experience developing Sales and Omnichannel Engagement training programs, and a passion for developing people.
  • Digital and multi-channel learning: experience designing and delivering learning through progressive digital and generative AI solutions and multi-channel formats (e.g., virtual / hybrid, e-learning, micro-learning).
  • Business partnership: acts as a strategic thought partner to commercial leaders, influences priorities, and balances competing stakeholder needs across a complex cross-functional and global matrix without direct authority.
  • Commercial and compliance acumen: strong business acumen and knowledge of pharmaceutical sales and marketing processes, regulations, and Canadian compliance standards / code of conduct.
  • Data-driven decision making: uses learning and business impact data to make informed decisions and drive business outcomes.
  • Communication and collaboration: outstanding communication, facilitation, and influencing skills, including in virtual settings using digital collaboration tools (e.g., MS Teams, Loop).
  • Agility and execution: project and change management experience, with the ability to work in an agile manner and prioritize workload effectively.
  • Innovation and growth mindset: leads by example through intentional skill development, experimentation, and continuous improvement, fostering a culture of digital curiosity.

The successful candidate combines deep learning expertise with strong commercial understanding and genuine care for the people they support. This person listens first, builds trust with KAMs, managers, and leaders alike, and creates learning experiences that people want to take part in.
