Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is transforming the world of analytics through products including Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI, powering a new generation of data-first applications and helping organizations build a strong data culture.
Within Microsoft Fabric, the Business Intelligence team powers enterprise reporting and analytics through Power BI. The Analysis Services Engine team builds and evolves the analytical database engine that serves as the foundation for Power BI Semantic Models, SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), and Azure Analysis Services (AAS).
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who is passionate about building reliable, scalable, high-performance backend systems. You will work across the analytical database engine and cloud infrastructure, solving complex problems related to distributed systems, scalability, performance, and service reliability.

Responsibilities
- Own the design and development of robust distributed systems that power core analytics experiences, making technical decisions across performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
- Deploy and operate the Analysis Services engine across Power BI, Azure Analysis Services, and SQL Server Analysis Services.
- Monitor service health, troubleshoot complex production issues, respond to live-site incidents, and participate in an on-call rotation to maintain service availability and reliability.
- Define and track key metrics related to performance, service quality, and feature adoption, using insights to drive continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with customers to resolve technical issues, understand their needs, and translate feedback into product improvements.
- Partner with engineering and other stakeholders across Microsoft to deliver solutions that are secure, compliant, and aligned with customer and organizational requirements.

Qualifications
Required/minimum qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
Job Requirements: Other & Additional
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:
- This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred/Additional Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
- Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, computer networking, and database systems.
- Proficiency in C, C++, C#, or other object-oriented/system-level programming languages, with recent hands-on development experience.
- Experience designing, building, and operating scalable distributed or cloud services.
- Experience with live-site operations, monitoring, troubleshooting, performance analysis, and service reliability.
- Experience with database internals, including areas such as B+ trees, query optimization, or query execution.
- Experience with compilers, query optimizers, execution engines, or database engines such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
- Experience developing high-performance native code, including concurrent or lock-free systems.
- Strong design, debugging, and problem-solving skills with a focus on performance, quality, and engineering excellence.
Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $114,400 - CAD $203,900 per year.
